CSS Building Services, Inc. began in the 1970s as a family-owned business in New Brunswick, New Jersey, starting with small commercial accounts. Through dedication and strategic growth, CSS expanded its janitorial services across New Jersey, laying the groundwork for a thriving enterprise.

Bernadette Milito joined CSS in the late 1970s during a period when the janitorial industry was largely male dominated. Recognizing the lack of representation for women in leadership roles, she possessed a vision and determination to prove herself in the industry. By 1994, Ms. Milito ascended to the role of president, where her hard work and resilience transformed CSS into one of the largest women-owned building services companies in the United States. Her leadership not only drove the company’s growth into servicing large commercial accounts but also paved the way for CSS to take on industrial projects. In 2000, Ms. Milito earned certification from the Women’s Business Enterprise Council (WBENC), further establishing CSS’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The company’s commitment to resilience was evident as it navigated challenges and embraced opportunities. In 2004, CSS Building Services underwent significant expansion, diversifying into various areas of facility maintenance. This growth led to the addition of services such as Clean Room Cleaning, remediation, interior and exterior demolition, and waste and recycling management, among others. CSS’s ability to adapt and expand its service offerings has positioned it as a comprehensive building services provider, serving clients in over 22 states.
